Banasura Sagar Dam: boats, islands and the hill behind
Banasura Sagar is the big reservoir of north-west Wayanad, with green islands scattered across the water and the Banasura hills behind. It is one of the easiest and most family-friendly outings in the district.
What is there to do at Banasura Sagar Dam?
Walk along the dam top for views of the reservoir and its islands, take a speedboat or pedal-boat ride, and in clear weather join a guided walk on Banasura Hill. The dam is often described as the largest earth dam in India and is about 25 km from Vythiri, under an hour's drive.

What to do there
Most visitors walk the dam top first, then take a speedboat or pedal boat across the reservoir between the islands. The surrounding hills are part of the Banasura range, and on clear days you can see layers of ridges behind the water. Small stalls near the entrance sell tea, cut fruit and snacks.
When to go
The reservoir is fullest after the monsoon, from September to December, when the islands are greenest. In March and April the water drops and more of the shore shows. Boat rides pause in strong wind and heavy rain.
Combine it with

Questions
What is the best time of day to visit Banasura Sagar?
Late afternoon, when the light falls across the islands and the heat has gone. Mornings are quieter on weekdays. Allow two to three hours including a boat ride.
Is Banasura Sagar good for children?
Yes. The dam top is a flat, wide walk, the boat rides are short, and there are snack stalls near the entrance. Keep children close on the dam edge and on the boats.
Can we trek Banasura Hill?
Guided treks on Banasura Hill are run in the drier months, subject to forest-department rules. They are steeper and longer than the dam walk, so plan a full morning and check whether they are running before you go.
