Kochi to Wayanad: by road or train
From Kochi, most people either drive north through Thrissur and Kozhikode or take a train to Kozhikode and drive the last two hours up the ghat to Vythiri.
How far is Wayanad from Kochi?
About 260 km from Kochi to Vythiri in south Wayanad, a drive of 6 to 7 hours via Thrissur and Kozhikode, finishing up the Thamarassery Ghat. Many travellers instead take a train from Ernakulam to Kozhikode, about 4 hours, then drive the last 60 km, about 2 hours.

Driving tips
Start early to clear Kochi and Thrissur before traffic builds. The last stretch up the Thamarassery Ghat is best done in daylight; in the monsoon, mist and slow trucks can add an hour. Fuel up in Kozhikode or Thamarassery.
By train
Many trains run between Ernakulam and Kozhikode through the day. From Kozhikode station, it is about 2 hours by taxi to Vythiri. Ask us when you book and we will tell you how to reach your resort from the station.
Arriving in Vythiri
Vythiri is the first town after the top of the ghat, so resorts there are the quickest to reach from Kochi. From here, Pookode Lake is ten minutes away and Chembra Peak and Soochipara Falls are under an hour.
Combining Wayanad with the rest of Kerala
Many travellers pair Kochi with Wayanad on a longer Kerala trip. A simple loop is Kochi (two nights) → Wayanad (two or three nights) → back via Kozhikode, or continue north to Kannur and its beaches. If you are coming from Munnar or Alappuzha, Kochi is the natural midpoint, so break the journey there rather than driving straight through.

Questions
Is it better to drive or take the train from Kochi?
The train is more relaxing: Ernakulam to Kozhikode is about 4 hours on frequent trains, then a taxi up the ghat. Driving gives you flexibility for stops, but the coastal highway through Thrissur and Malappuram is busy most of the day.
Can I fly from Kochi to Wayanad?
Wayanad has no airport, and there are no practical flights between Kochi and Kozhikode. Road or rail is faster door to door.
Where should I break the drive?
Thrissur is a good breakfast stop, and Kozhikode is famous for its biryani and halwa, which makes it the natural lunch stop before the ghat.
