Wayanad in the monsoon
From June to September Wayanad turns its greenest, the waterfalls run full and mist sits on the tea for days. It is a different trip from the dry season, and a good one if you plan for rain.
Is Wayanad worth visiting in the monsoon?
Yes, if you want rain, mist and quiet more than treks. From June to September the hills are at their greenest and waterfalls such as Soochipara and Meenmutty are at their fullest. Some treks and Kuruva Island usually close, roads are slower, and district rain alerts should be checked before driving.

What the monsoon is like
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Wayanad in early June and eases off by late September. The heaviest rain falls in July and August. Rain rarely falls nonstop all day: expect long showers, breaks of weak sunshine, and mist that drifts up from the valleys in the afternoon. Days are around 18 to 25 °C, so it is cool rather than hot.
What is good about it
- Waterfalls at full flow. Soochipara and Meenmutty are at their most powerful, though the paths can close on very wet days.
- The greenest landscape. Tea, coffee and paddy fields are a bright, almost unreal green.
- Fewer crowds. Outside long weekends, popular spots are quiet.
- Slow days. Rain on a tiled roof, tea on the verandah and a book are the reason many people come.
What to plan around
- Treks and river islands close; keep a flexible list of indoor and short outings.
- Ghat roads are slower and occasionally close for a few hours after slides; leave margin on travel days.
- Mobile networks can drop during storms, and short power cuts happen; ask us for resorts with power backup.
- Leeches appear on forest paths after rain. They are harmless but unpleasant; leech socks help.
A rainy-day plan from Vythiri
Start with a plantation walk between showers, then drive ten minutes to Pookode Lake. After lunch, if the weather allows, visit Banasura Sagar Dam, where the reservoir and islands look dramatic under low cloud. End the day on the verandah. On a clear spell, drive to Soochipara Falls, but check that the path is open first.
Places to visit
| Place | Distance | Drive | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pookode Lake | 3 km | 10 min | Families, a slow first evening |
| Soochipara Falls | 27 km | 1 hr | Waterfall swims after the monsoon |
| Banasura Sagar Dam | 25 km | 50 min | Speedboats, island views, families |
| Meenmutty Falls | 35 km | 1 hr 15 min | A short jungle walk to a big drop |
Approximate road distances from Vythiri. Ghat roads are slow after rain, so add time in the monsoon.
Questions
Which places are closed in Wayanad during the monsoon?
The Chembra Peak trek and Kuruva Island are usually closed in the heaviest months, and waterfalls or forest trails may close after very heavy rain. Pookode Lake, Edakkal Caves and Banasura Sagar Dam generally stay open, weather permitting. Check the day before.
Is it safe to travel to Wayanad in the monsoon?
Most monsoon trips are uneventful, but very heavy rain can cause landslides and road closures in hilly parts of the district. Follow the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority and district alerts, avoid driving after dark in heavy rain, and keep your plans flexible.
What should I pack for Wayanad in the rains?
A light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, sandals or shoes with grip, a small umbrella, and something warm for the evenings. Leech socks help on forest walks; salt or a lighter flame removes leeches.
Can we swim and have a campfire in the monsoon?
It depends on the resort. Most pools stay open between showers and close during thunderstorms, and a campfire needs a dry evening. Ask us for resorts with a covered sit-out or a heated pool if that matters to you.
