Chembra Peak trek: how to plan it
Chembra is Wayanad's highest peak and its best-known trek: grassland, cloud forest edges and a heart-shaped lake on the way up. It is run and controlled by the forest department, so planning matters.
How do you trek Chembra Peak in Wayanad?
Chembra Peak, about 2,100 m, is reached on a guided forest-department trek that starts near Meppadi, about 20 km from Vythiri. Permits are issued in the morning to a limited number of groups, the trek goes up through grassland to a heart-shaped lake, and it closes during fire season, heavy rain and conservation periods.

How the permit works
Treks are guided and permits are issued at the forest office near the start of the trail, early in the morning. Numbers are limited each day, so arriving early matters, especially on weekends. Fees are charged per group plus per person, with a camera fee. Rules and fees change, so confirm them before you go.
On the trail
The path leaves the tea estates and climbs into open grassland with wide views over the Wayanad plateau. The heart-shaped lake is the turnaround point for most treks. The upper slopes have little shade, so mornings are far more pleasant than afternoons. Stay with your guide and on the marked path; the grassland is fragile and fire risk is high in the dry months.
Make a day of it
Soochipara Falls and Meenmutty Falls are both close to Meppadi, so a fit group can trek in the morning and visit a waterfall after lunch. Ask us for a resort near Meppadi if the trek is your main plan; many can pack breakfast for an early start.
Places to visit
| Place | Distance | Drive | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chembra Peak | 20 km | 45 min | Fit walkers, sunrise views |
| Soochipara Falls | 27 km | 1 hr | Waterfall swims after the monsoon |
| Meenmutty Falls | 35 km | 1 hr 15 min | A short jungle walk to a big drop |
Approximate road distances from Vythiri. Ghat roads are slow after rain, so add time in the monsoon.
Questions
Is the Chembra Peak trek open now?
It depends on the season and forest-department decisions. The trek closes during the fire-prone dry months, in heavy monsoon rain, and has closed for long periods for conservation. Ask us or the forest office the day before; we check for our guests.
How difficult is the Chembra trek?
Moderate to hard for most people. The path is steep and exposed in places, with little shade on the grassland. Allow several hours for the round trip to the heart-shaped lake, carry water and start early before the sun is high.
What should I carry for Chembra?
Water (at least 1.5 litres each), a cap and sunscreen, light rain gear, shoes with grip, a snack and cash for fees. Plastic is restricted in the area, so bring a steel bottle. Drones and littering are not allowed.
Can children do the Chembra trek?
Older children who walk regularly can manage it with breaks. For young children, Pookode Lake or a plantation walk are better choices.
