Where to stay in Wayanad
Wayanad is about 2,100 sq km of hills, so the area you pick decides how much of your trip is spent driving. Here is how the five main areas compare.
The short answer
For a first trip of two or three nights, stay in Vythiri or Lakkidi in the south. It is the closest part of Wayanad to Kozhikode, has the most mist and tea-estate views, and puts Pookode Lake, Chembra Peak, Soochipara Falls and Banasura Sagar Dam within an hour. Choose Sulthan Bathery or Mananthavady if wildlife safaris are your main plan.
| Area | Best for | Good | Less good |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vythiri and Lakkidi South, on the Kozhikode road | First visits, couples, short trips | Closest to Kozhikode; Pookode Lake, Chembra, Soochipara and Banasura within an hour; many tea and forest views. | Weekend traffic on the ghat road; further from Muthanga and Tholpetty. |
| Kalpetta Centre | Budget stays, shopping, hospitals | The district town, with hotels, restaurants and fuel. Central for day trips in every direction. | A town, not a hill stay. Few views and more noise. |
| Meppadi South-east | Trekkers | Closest to Chembra Peak, Soochipara and Meenmutty; tea estates and homestays. | Narrow roads; fewer places to eat in the evening. |
| Sulthan Bathery East, on the Mysuru road | Drivers from Bengaluru, wildlife safaris | First town after the Bandipur forest; close to Edakkal Caves and Muthanga. | Hotter and flatter; less mist than the south. |
| Mananthavady and Thirunelli North | Wildlife, temples, quiet | Near Kuruva Island, Tholpetty and Thirunelli Temple; deep forest. | Far from the southern sights; patchy mobile signal. |
What makes a resort in Wayanad worth it
Price and photos say little about the stay itself. Before you book any resort in Wayanad, ask these questions:
- How is the last kilometre? Some properties are reached only by a steep jeep track. Fine for an adventure, hard with elderly parents or a low car.
- What is the view in the monsoon? Valley views disappear into cloud from June to September. A room with a verandah over the plantation still feels open.
- Is food available on site? Outside the towns there are few restaurants open after 8 pm.
- What are the rules? Check-in time, advance, cancellation and children's policies differ between resorts. Get them in writing before you pay.
- Are the photos real? Ask for a short video of the room you are booking.
